BOMA/GLA Updates Supervisor Barger’s Office on Key CRE Issues

Kathryn Barger, candidate running for the 5th District LA County Supervisors seat.

BOMA/GLA advocacy staff recently met with Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s office to discuss key issues in District 5. Led with the help of our Northeast Regional Council Chair, the conversation focused on how County decisions impact commercial properties, tenants, and local communities.

What You Need to Know

During the conversation, BOMA/GLA advocated on some core issues:

Energy Efficiency & Incentives: The County plans a Building Performance Standard for large buildings (over 50,000 sq. ft.) to reduce energy use and carbon emissions. It will also update green building rules starting in 2026, adding requirements like cool roofs, EV-ready wiring, and higher efficiency standards. BOMA/GLA stressed that these rules need rebates, incentives, and support to help owners comply.

Homelessness, Safety & Transit: The County leads on homelessness services and funding. BOMA/GLA highlighted how encampments and safety issues affect tenants, customers, and building operations, and asked leaders to include commercial property perspectives in planning and transit projects.

Supervisor Barger's office shared updates on public safety, homelessness, and infrastructure in her district. Her work on homelessness and safety matches many of BOMA/GLA’s priorities.

How It Impacts You

Lower Compliance Costs: New building standards and performance mandates will directly affect building operations and retrofit requirements. Advocacy for incentives could save property owners significant costs.

Safer Business Districts: Decisions on public safety and homelessness programs directly affect the safety and stability of commercial areas.

Your Voice at the Table: By meeting directly with decision-makers, BOMA/GLA ensures our members’ perspectives shape the policies that affect how buildings are managed and valued.
