LA City Council Approves Convention Center Expansion

The Los Angeles City Council has officially approved the Convention Center Expansion and Modernization Project. 

This project could bring many opportunities and challenges to our DTLA members especially. 

What You Need to Know 

The project includes expanding the Convention Center with 190,000 square feet of new exhibit halls, 55,000 square feet of meeting rooms, and 95,000 square feet of flexible, multi-purpose space. It will also modernize existing facilities and install new digital signage throughout the Convention Center. 

The idea is that the expansion and modernization of the Convention Center would help revitalize downtown Los Angeles and prepare the city to host larger events during the 2028 Olympics. 

Some critics worry that the high taxpayer cost and construction disruptions may outweigh the benefits if the project doesn’t generate the expected revenue or economic boost. 

For example, taxpayers would cover $167 million in 2031 for debt and operations of the convention center.

Property managers may see more construction and some disruptions, but the project could also bring more visitors and activity to the area. Planning around schedules can help limit impacts on tenants and operations. 

For service providers, the expansion could bring new work opportunities, such as higher demand in security, cleaning, catering, and other support services, though it could also mean longer hours or tighter deadlines during construction. 

This expansion could attract larger conventions to LA, potentially improving regional demand for nearby real estate.
