Leadership Starts Before the Promotion
A leadership title may come later. The habits that prepare you for it can start now.
Property professionals lead every time they help a team make a clear decision, bring the right people together, or make a process easier for others. You may already be doing some of this work without calling it leadership.
If you want to grow, look for a manageable opportunity to take ownership. You could lead a short discussion about a recurring building issue, help a newer colleague learn a process, or coordinate input from different teams before a decision is made.
In a BOMA/GLA committee, you could suggest a topic members need help understanding or help organize the conversation around it.
Pay attention to how you do the work. Did you make room for other perspectives? Did you follow through on what you promised? Did the group leave knowing what happens next? Those actions build trust, whether you supervise anyone or not.
It also helps to tell a mentor or supervisor what you want to learn. Ask for feedback on a specific skill, such as running a meeting or explaining a recommendation. Their observations can help you choose your next opportunity.
Your challenge for this week: Choose one leadership skill and find one chance to practice it this month. Afterward, ask someone what you did well and what you could improve.
