Want to Grow as a Leader? Start with a Committee

workshop

Leadership experience does not always begin with a promotion. For property professionals, it can begin by helping plan a committee discussion, asking a useful question at a meeting, or connecting a colleague with a resource they need.

A committee gives you a place to practice skills that matter on the job. You hear how other buildings handle familiar problems. You meet people in different roles. And you get a better view of the issues shaping commercial real estate across Greater Los Angeles.

The key is to participate, rather than simply attend. Here are three ways to get started:

  • Choose a topic connected to your work. If you manage building operations, for example, a discussion about codes, security, sustainability, or technology may give you ideas you can bring back to your property.
  • Bring one real question. Ask how another team solved a problem you are facing. You may leave with an answer and a new professional connection.
  • Take on one small responsibility. Help shape a meeting topic, welcome a new member, or share a resource with the group. Small contributions help you build confidence and show others what you can do.

You do not need to know everything to contribute. Your experience at your building is valuable, and your questions may help someone else in the room.

Your October challenge: Pick one BOMA/GLA committee that interests you and take one step beyond attending. Ask a question, share an idea, or volunteer to help.
