Is Your Building Ready for the Next Big Earthquake?

Codes Educational Event 2026

Californians have long been told that "the Big One" is not a matter of if, but when. For commercial real estate professionals, that means preparing today to protect our buildings, tenants, employees, and communities tomorrow.

As seismic regulations continue to evolve, property teams face growing responsibilities when it comes to building safety, compliance, and long-term planning.

At the same time, insurance companies are paying closer attention to earthquake risk, which could affect building upgrades, coverage, and future investment decisions.

To help members prepare, we are hosting an educational event on Tuesday, August 4, in El Segundo.

This educational program will provide practical insights on:

  • Recent seismic regulations and compliance requirements
  • Planning and managing seismic retrofit projects
  • Navigating permitting and approvals with LADBS
  • Understanding how insurance trends may impact building decisions
  • Protecting assets while minimizing disruptions to tenants and operations

Preparing for an earthquake is about more than meeting regulations. It is about ensuring that our buildings are safer and that property teams are ready to protect the people who work in and visit our properties should a major seismic event occur.

Property managers, engineers, owners, and operations teams all have an important role to play in improving resilience and reducing risk.

BOMA/GLA would like to thank our Codes & Regulations Committee for bringing together industry experts to discuss these important issues and provide members with practical guidance they can apply to their buildings.

The next major earthquake may not happen tomorrow, but preparing for it cannot wait.

We hope you will join us on August 4 as we discuss how the commercial real estate industry can stay ahead of changing requirements and continue building safer, more resilient properties. Register here.
