Exploring Sustainable Demolition with BOMA/GLA’s Sustainability Committee
This week, members of BOMA/GLA’s Sustainability Committee embarked on a tour of the IRS Demolition facility. The visit offered an in-depth look at how sustainable demolition practices are reshaping the construction and waste management industry.
What You Need to Know
The tour provided participants with firsthand insights into the environmental considerations behind the demolition process—from material recovery to third-party waste verification.
Attendees explored how facilities like IRS Demolition are implementing sustainable strategies to reduce landfill impact, promote safe gypsum reuse, and combat fraud in recycling diversion reporting.
IRS Demo and Sustainability Committee member Richard Ludt shared his presentation, “Toxic Trash: The Truth About Construction and Demolition Debris,” which challenged attendees to look beyond green certifications and consider the real-world environmental impacts of construction waste.
Through practical demonstrations and discussion, participants gained a clearer understanding of how materials like gypsum, universal waste, and engineered lumber are managed responsibly to protect public health and support California’s zero waste goals.
How It Impacts You
Sustainability is a growing priority in commercial real estate operations.
Understanding how materials are recycled, reused, and reported not only strengthens compliance with evolving codes but also enhances the credibility of green building initiatives.
Tours like this empower property professionals to identify authentic sustainability practices and avoid “greenwashing” pitfalls.
