BOMA/GLA Advocacy Improves LA County Commercial Tenant Proposal
Los Angeles County is considering new rules for commercial landlords and tenants that could have a major impact on our members.
On September 1, the Board of Supervisors approved a motion to study possible commercial tenant protections. This could include landlord licensing, limits on rent increases and lease terminations, relocation payments, and new reporting requirements.
Importantly, the County did not approve commercial rent control or a landlord licensing program. Any new rules would have to come back to the Board for approval.
BOMA/GLA spoke directly with the offices of Supervisors Holly Mitchell, Lindsey Horvath, and Kathryn Barger about our concerns. We are glad to have relationships with County leaders that allow us to bring issues like this directly to the people making these decisions and we appreciate that they listened.
Following our advocacy, the proposal was improved. Changes included faster timelines for the County's studies, consideration of a cap on relocation payments, less lease data being requested from property owners, potential incentives for owners, and a greater focus on protecting small and legacy businesses.
This is why staying engaged matters. The proposal is still moving forward, and BOMA/GLA will continue advocating for our members as the County develops its recommendations.
